Saejowi Initiative for National Integration
Saejowi is a non-profit NGO in Seoul, Republic of Korea that assists North Korean refugees through psychological and medical healthcare, education, and employment services. Establishd in 1988, Saejowi is the only centre in the world to license North Korean counsellors. Over the past decade, Saejowi has provided direct services to over one in three North Korean refugees in South Korea. As over 80 per cent of North Korean refugees are women, and many are subjected to human trafficking during their escape, many of Saejowi's programmes are specifically designed to help women articulate their needs and find healing from sexual trauma. These programmes include: Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Prevention Programme, Reunification Plays, and hospital funding to assist women in their recovery. Saejowi's literary journal Underwater Railroad raises awareness about survivors' stories through non-fiction accounts and poetry.
