Given the recent events happening in the city of Kathmandu, Nepal, GAATW Secretariat sends a message of Solidarity for our Friends
GAATW has many members, partners, friends and allies in Nepal. All of them are part of the social justice movements in the country.
So along with our friends, we at GAATW Secretariat have gone through a range of emotions over the last several days. When images of young people protesting against corruption and nepotism on the streets of Kathmandu came in, we were filled with energy, enthusiasm and hope. Unfortunately, the brutal killings of innocent people, violence and destruction of public property that followed filled us with concern, confusion, fear and worry. We reached out to our colleagues and desperately waited for the violence to subside. We are somewhat relieved now that the people of Nepal have been able to find a temporary solution and are determined to preserve the democracy for which they had fought hard.
Dear Friends in Nepal, along with you, we mourn the loss of lives and destruction of public property. Along with all of you, we condemn the violence and atrocities. We hold each one of you in our hearts and stand in solidarity as you move forward to build a more just, inclusive and accountable system. The road ahead is going to be long, and there will be hurdles and setbacks. We wish you much positive energy as you continue your journey towards a democratic and peaceful future.
In solidarity,
GAATW IS team.
